President¡¯s Greeting

Hanyang will once again become the strength of Korea.
Please be part of the strength of Hanyang.

Who has been leading Korea?
These days, universities are facing unprecedented changes and challenges.
While there are absolute threats such as a rapid reduction in the number of students
and financial problems, universities are also being called upon to change education
paradigms as the 4th industrial revolution brings about new information and
communication technologies, such as artificial intelligence, the internet of things,
big data, and mobile networks, which are currently being integrated
into the economy and society.

Additionally, global competition among renowned universities around the world
is intensifying, and the gap between those universities is only getting wider.
The reason why the world's most prestigious universities, such as Harvard
and Stanford, can maintain their reputations while achieving sustainable growth
is because of the education investment and research innovation made
possible through a great number of donations to the universities.
Under the Harvard Management Company, which was established in 1974,
200 staff members are currently managing 37.1 billion dollars (around 42
trillion won) in donations, providing available funds to the university every year.

In 2017, a total of 1.8 billion dollars (about 2 trillion won) was allocated
to the university's education and research spending.
The Stanford Management Company, established in 1991, is currently managing
24.8 billion dollars (about 28 trillion won) with 69 staff members, making 1.2 billion dollars
(about 1.35 trillion won) available to the university in 2017. Although we still have far to go
to reach a level comparable to those renowned universities, Hanyang University has been able to raise about 140 billion won in donations through the ¡°Capital Campaign (Concentrated Large Sum Donation Raising Campaign)¡± from 2013 to 2018.

This campaign is not only considered one of the most successful fundraising campaigns of any Korean university not only in terms of the amount donated but also in regard to its contents and the level of completion. I would like to focus on two factors necessary to accomplish our goals and further advance the progress of Hanyang University. First is attracting sustainable large sum donations and enhancing them. We will rearrange and expand the Hanyang Alumni Fundraising Association, which is a network of our donors, and continue to raise funds for the construction of urgent educational facilities such as centers for biomedicine, nursing, mechanics, and electronics facilities.

The second is activating and organizing small and medium-sized donations. This can be accomplished by continuing to create attractive fundraising items for small and medium-scale donors, reinforcing the promotion of mobile and online fundraising campaigns, and reestablishing a donor reception system for small and medium-scale donors. At the start of Hanyang University's 15th President's term, I promised that I would do my best for the Taking Action for the Future with a View of Hanyang's Past. I would like to ask with all due respect for the "beautiful companions" who have been supporting Hanyang to stay with us as donors who stand firmly on the ground beside us. I would like to take part in the great journey of 100 years of Hanyang becoming a prestigious global university, hand-in-hand with our donors.

Thank you.
